GIS (geographic information systems) refers to computerized mapping and geographic data and the applications that bring that data together for both visual and spatial analysis. The results of such analysis can be as simple as associating a road map with aerial photography, or as complex as analyzing the density of different populations within a city boundary, calculating the surface area of a lake, or modeling potential flood events.

Geographic projection refers to the model used to define the way the 3-dimentional Earth is displayed in 2-dimensional space, such as on a print map on a computer screen. A datum is a set of reference points on the earth's surface against which position measurements are made.
